5 Things That Can Make Or Break Any Night

Here at the American Bartending School in Tampa, we offer expertly taught bartending programs that help prepare bartenders for the industry. Now, whether you’ve been bartending for awhile, or just starting out, it can be hard to “figure out your crowd” sometimes. In order to help you achieve this on any given night, you first have to remember this very simple principle in bartending: “more tips = more money in your pockets, right?” That usually means knowing the right drinks to offer your customers, creating a certain atmosphere, or paying attention to what’s going on around you at any given time. Once you’ve obtained your Bartender Certification in FL and you’re working in the field, you may think you know it all, but think again.

What’s happening on a given night can often play a very big role in a bartender’s night. Luckily for you, we have some key factors to be mindful of that may help “make or break” your night:

  1. Are there any big sporting events going on? Whether it’s the Super Bowl, World Series, or NBA Finals, you need to be prepared to SELL! Factor in the teams involved in those games as well however. Do the cities they represent have a popular local beer? Try and sell it at your bar during those games (talk to your manager first of course). You may also want to see about having contests, specials, or other unique events during any playoff game or special sporting event.
  2. Are the Oscars or another big awards show on that night? If you’re opened on a special “awards show night” (Oscars, Emmys, Etc) try offering wine or cocktail specials. You may even want to rename some classic cocktails to reflect the event (IE: if it’s the Oscars, name a drink after a movie).
  3. Is it a Holiday? Having drink specials available for any popular Holiday season (IE: Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, New Years, Etc) is a great way to increase your sales. You may even want to offer each “special” a few days before and after that holiday as well. Seasonal cocktails and beers are also a great way to incorporate this concept.
  4. Has the weather changed drastically? Depending on the weather, season, or general atmosphere surrounding your bar or restaurant, you should try and sell certain things. For example, if it’s hotter outside, try carrying more light or citrus tasting beers. If it’s colder outside, try offering a larger variety of dark beers. Your customers are traveling from outside of your bar to get to your bar right? So the chances are, they have had to deal with whatever weather was going on outside as well. Factor that in accordingly.

These are all big factors that can sometimes “make or break your night!” Don’t let that “easy money” pass you by. As a bartender, your job is about providing equal parts quality service and value to your customers. That value to the customer however can be both “monetary” and “experience” based. Any bartender can offer a popular or common beer or cocktail on any given night of the week. It takes a prepared bartender to factor in what beers or cocktails are going to keep customers coming back for more. Remember: ““more tips = more money in your pockets.” We hope these tips help make your next shift an easy and financially rewarding one.
